A New Cooling Solution for Steel Mills: Two-Fluid Mist Cannon Machine Creates a ‘Cool and Dry’ Production Environment

In the steelmaking workshop of a steel mill, the continuous heat released by converters and rolling mills often makes the room temperature exceed 40℃ in summer. High temperatures not only affect workers’ operating efficiency but also may cause equipment failures due to overheating. Traditional water spraying for cooling can temporarily reduce the temperature, but it will wet the ground, causing a slip risk, and at the same time, increasing the hidden danger of steel corrosion. However, the two-fluid mist cannon machine, relying on the “gas-water mixed atomization” technology, has achieved a breakthrough of “only reducing temperature without increasing humidity” in the cooling scenario of steel mills.

Technical Core: The “Invisible Cooling” Magic of Micron-Level Mist Particles

The two-fluid mist cannon machine adopts dual drives of compressed air and water flow. When the water flow passes through a special nozzle, it is cut into ultra-fine mist particles of 5-10 microns by high-speed air flow. These mist particles quickly evaporate in the air, achieving cooling by absorbing heat, and will not form stagnant water on the ground at all. Its cooling principle is similar to “evaporative cooling” in nature. 1 kilogram of water mist can absorb about 670 kilocalories of heat, which can reduce the temperature of a 100-square-meter area by 5-8℃, and the cooling efficiency is more than 3 times that of traditional fans.

More importantly, the equipment can precisely control the concentration of mist particles to ensure that the mist particles have completely evaporated before reaching the ground or the equipment surface, avoiding the disadvantage of “getting more and more humid as spraying” of ordinary spray equipment. At the same time, the mist particles can absorb dust in the air, reducing dust in the workshop while cooling, killing two birds with one stone.

Case: The “Cool Revolution” in the Rolling Workshop

The hot rolling workshop of a large steel mill in Shandong has long been troubled by high temperatures. The 4 rolling mill production lines in the workshop run continuously every day. In the summer afternoon, the average temperature of the workshop reaches 42℃. Workers need to rotate rest every hour, but heatstroke still occurs from time to time. Previously, industrial large fans and spray systems were tried: the fans blow hot air, with little cooling effect; although the spray system can cool down, the water on the ground caused 3 cases of workers slipping, and the steel surface was prone to rust, resulting in a 2% increase in the defective rate every month.

Last summer, the factory installed 6 two-fluid mist cannon machines in the workshop, arranged in a “pin” shape according to the rolling mill layout. After the equipment was started, it sprayed ultra-fine mist particles to the upper part of the workshop with a range of 30 meters. Through the linkage of the intelligent temperature control system, it automatically turned on when the detected temperature exceeded 35℃ and stopped when it dropped to 30℃. After one week of operation, the average temperature of the workshop was stable at 32℃, and the sensible temperature in the workers’ operation area decreased more significantly.

The usage data for one month showed that there were zero cases of workers suffering from heatstroke, the rotation interval was extended to 2 hours, and production efficiency increased by 18%; the ground remained dry, and there were no more slip accidents; the steel corrosion rate dropped to 0.5%, reducing losses by about 80,000 yuan per month. More surprisingly, after the mist particles adsorbed the dust, the PM10 concentration in the workshop dropped from 2.1mg/m³ to 0.8mg/m³, improving the working environment.

Multiple Advantages Adapted to Steel Mills

The two-fluid mist cannon machine has shown strong adaptability in steel mill scenarios: the machine body is made of high-temperature resistant and corrosion-resistant materials, which can withstand high-temperature radiation and metal dust erosion in the workshop; the equipment is small in size and can be installed on workshop columns, crane beams and other positions without occupying production space; it supports docking with the steel mill’s MES system, and automatically adjusts the spray intensity according to the production rhythm to avoid affecting the steel rolling process.

In terms of energy consumption, the power of a single device is only 2.2kW, and the daily power consumption for 8 hours of operation is less than 18 kWh, which is more than 70% energy-saving compared with air-conditioning systems. For different workshops such as steelmaking and continuous casting, the size of mist particles can also be customized: the steelmaking workshop uses finer mist particles (5 microns) to accelerate evaporation and cooling, while the raw material warehouse uses slightly coarser mist particles (10 microns) to take into account both cooling and dust suppression.

A New Cooling Solution for Steel Mills: Two-Fluid Mist Cannon Machine Creates a ‘Cool and Dry’ Production Environment

High temperature has always been an “invisible bottleneck” restricting the summer production efficiency of steel mills. The two-fluid mist cannon machine, with the core advantage of “not wetting the ground”, has broken the traditional perception of “cooling must be humid”. When ultra-fine mist particles quietly evaporate above the rolling mill, they take away not only heat but also the protection of workers’ health and production safety, providing an efficient, safe and economical new cooling option for high-temperature workshops in steel mills.
